Microsoft SQL Server

SQL Server is a more robust database and is now the standard solution for The Edge.

It offers a number of key features over the previously used Microsoft Access.

  • Increased capacity
  • Increased security
  • Quicker access to data
  • More robust error handling
  • Better scalability

 

SQL Server Express Edition

SQL Server Express Edition provides 10 GB of storage, five times the storage limit of a Microsoft Access database, and should satisfy most installations.   

 

SQL Server Runtime

SQL Server Runtime Edition is essentially unlimited in database capacity. Through the Microsoft Partner program we are able to offer a runtime version of SQL Server at a steep discount.  However, this version can only be used with The Edge. 

The cost is $500 per server and $100 for each station that connects to The Edge.  This is substantially cheaper than purchasing SQL Server on your own.

 

Microsoft SQL Standard Edition

If you require a full version of SQL server that can be used with other applications then please look at the latest SQL Server documentation for pricing and configuration.

SQL Server Standard Edition is unlimited in database capacity and offers all the features of SQL server.  Go to  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-2019 for information about pricing.  You’ll need a license for each store.

 

Preparation

  • You will need a dedicated server machine that meets minimum specifications. 
  • SQL requires different database management skills and maintenance may be somewhat more complicated than what you're accustomed to with Access.
  • You will need to find a local technician who is familiar with SQL.

 

Upgrade Process

Installation is a two-step process, managed and scheduled with The Edge Support Team:

 Appointment 1:

  • Assessment of needs
  • Installation of MS SQL Server Express environment
  • Upgrade to the latest version of The Edge
  • Database integrity testing
  • SQL upgrade testing
  • Estimate timing for SQL appointment 2.

Appointment 2:

  • Convert data to SQL Server
  • Configure all workstation settings
  • Test operation
  • Test and verify backup.

Edge Licensing Fees

There are some costs associated with upgrading to SQL:

  • There is a one-time service fee to perform the SQL upgrade, equivalent to 10% of your total license fee.
  • There is a 10% Edge software license fee upcharge.
  • The annual Edge support contract increases to 20% of the total license fee.
