Shopify FAQ

Q:  Can I integrate into an existing Shopify store?
A:
Yes.  However, there are some special considerations.  Please review our Shopify documentation carefully here: Shopify Integration

Q:  Does the Edge setup my Shopify store?
A:
No.  We set up the Edge Connector (ECon) app that integrates Edge with Shopify, but we do not create your store or get involved in Shopify setup.

Q:  Can items be uploaded with the status Draft instead of Active?
A:
Not currently.  Any item that is uploaded will be set as Active.

Q:  Can the integration be reversed or undone?
A:
The integration itself can be uninstalled, but any changes it makes to your store are permanent.  If you are attempting to integrate a live store, we strongly recommend making a backup of your current site and setting it up on a secondary test store to ensure the integration will work for you.

Q:  Can I use Shopify and another integration such as a Punchmark website?
A:
No.  The Edge can only support one integration at this time.

Q:  Can I put non-Edge items in my store?
A:
Yes.  However, the Edge utilizes the SKU field from the Shopify product page to link Edge items to Shopify items.  If you are utilizing this field, it is possible Edge may inadvertently try to manage, or even delete, the product page.

Q:  Do I need a separate computer for the integration?
A:
No.  The ECon app must be installed directly on your server.  It runs automatically.  If you are processing web sales, though, you will need a workstation (or Windows profile) configured for the web store.

Q:  Do new customers entered in the Edge automatically upload to Shopify?
A:
No.  You can manually upload all your customers at any time, but customers do not automatically go from Edge to Shopify.  If you are processing web sales, customers added on Shopify do automatically download into Edge.

Q:  What field does Shopify use to link to Edge items?
A:
The SKU field on the Shopify product page is used to link the items.  For items being managed individually, this will be populated with the Edge item number.  For items being managed by vendor style, this will be populated by a combination of the vendor’s ID and vendor style number.

Q:  Does it support bulk inventory?
A:
UPC bulk is supported.  The other bulk pricing methods are not.

Q:  Can I add images on Shopify?
A:
Yes, but it is strongly recommended that all images are managed from Edge.  There is an option on whether you want ECon to overwrite Shopify images.

  • If this is turned on, Edge will exclusively manage images and when it synchronizes images added through Shopify will be deleted.
  • If this is turned off, then on initial item upload Edge images will be sent, but any image changes in Edge will never upload.  It will however not delete your Shopify images.

Q:  Can I map Edge categories to my Product Types?
A:
We do not currently have a way to automatically map Product Types.  However, Product Types can be created in either Shopify or Edge and you can assign many items to new Product Types easily.

Q:  Can I have special pricing for Shopify that is different than my in store pricing?
A:
We do not currently have a way to do separate pricing for Shopify.  It will use the item’s Retail price for MSRP and if its Current price is lower the item will appear on sale.

Q:  What happens when an item is sold?  Is it removed or archived on Shopify?
A:
For individually priced Edge items (not bulk), it depends on how the category is set up to be managed online.  There are two options:

  1. The default setting is to manage items by Edge item number.  In these instances, there is a one to one relationship between the Edge item and the Shopify product page.  This means if you carry 5 of the same ring (same vendor/style), then it will upload five different product pages.  When an item is sold, the product page is removed.  This setting is best for unique pieces.
  2. The other option is to manage them by vendor/style.  In these instances, the items are grouped by vendor/style and only uploaded to Shopify as one product page that carries a quantity.  When an item is sold, the quantity is reduced.  This setting is best for items where you carry multiple of the same exact piece.

Bulk items behave the same as individual items managed by vendor/style.

Q:  What information synchronizes for items?
A:
Web Title, Web Description, Product Type, Collections, and Tags synchronize bi-directionally;  that is, changes made in either Edge or Shopify will get sent back and forth.  However, we strongly recommend relying on Edge as the central hub.  We cannot guarantee that changes made on Shopify will not be overwritten.

Shopify does not allow us to download images.  This is why we advise managing images through the Edge exclusively.

Q:  What information synchronizes for customers?
A:
Customer contact methods synchronize bi-directionally.  However, when importing Shopify changes into Edge, we never overwrite existing contact methods.  For example, if a different address is entered on Shopify from what exists on the Edge customer record, it will be added as an additional address instead of overwriting the existing.

Q:  How do web sales get imported?
A:
Web sales are not immediately recorded into the Edge.  Instead they are placed in the Web Sale queue.  There is a Web Sale button at the top of the POS window where these queued sales will display.  When a sale is selected, all its details are loaded into POS for processing.  This includes the customer, shipping, item(s), taxes (optional, and payment.

Note that these details are not set in stone; they can be modified if necessary.
